Rhythm: 4/4 The Chobi

The Chobi is a variation of the Beledi, very simple and driving.

I find it very useful as a turn-around rhythm, and it does a great job of keeping the tempo of other Beledi family rhythms in check, especially during solos and finales.

Work on the basic rhythm, with no ornamentation, until your tone is perfect, and you can play while counting it out, and while speaking it.

Literally, say “Doum Doum Doum Tek Tek” as you play. It helps!

Practice until you can play the basic Chobi while holding a conversation, or listening to other music on the radio.

Once you get there then you should start thinking about ornamentation, and to keep the power of Chobi for any turn-around, be sure to keep the Teks on the 3 & 4 unadorned.
